SCISSOR SISTERS

Meet Scissor Sisters: bold, brash newcomers to the NYC music scene, with sounds that have linked grass-roots psychedelica with explosive disco arena anthems. Their already legendary shows have converted the downtown hipoisie into squealing, nelly ribbon dancers. Rainbow power and unicorn magic fuel the charged energy of their live performances that have been likened to the early days of B-52's and the BeeGees.

Their debut single, "Electrobix," is the first dance track of its kind to penetrate the silence surrounding gay body image issues. The song's haunting chorus, "You gotta pump your body/If you wanna be a hottie," will undoubtedly strike a chord not only with steadfast homosexuals, but those that love and covet their superior- yet-flawed lifestyle. Included on the record is the "Electrobix Passive Depressive remix" by Hungry Wives, the witchy quartet responsible for the electro hit "It's Over (I am Legendary, You are Not)."
Scissor Sisters consist of three downtown celebutards: Ana Matronic, a digital Ishtar who cut her teeth at Trannyshack in San Francisco and sharpened her claws as hostess of Knock-Off in NYC. An unrecognizable mistress of disguise, Ms. Matronic's emotive vibe scapes distant and foreign psychological planes. Babydaddy's electronic compositions feature a down-low under-pop that tempers the falsetto swirls of frontman Jake Shears. With vocal stylings that have been coined a blend of Sylvester and early George Michael, Shears expels electro-charged tales that range from hallucinating fashion industry prostitutes to adulterous rock'n roll hairdressers, injecting all with unabashed, hands-in-the air fun.

Babydaddy and Shears originally met in Kentucky and were introduced by a mutual friend to Ana Matronic while waiting in the lobby for a screening of Captain EO at Disneyland, where Matronic was vacationing from San Francisco. "I really thought she was a freak," says Shears, "but she could sing [Jackson's] 'Just Another Part of Meâ' like nobody's business." It was on the Teacup ride that the three realized they shared influences that range as wide as the early nineties Cologne acid scene to The Muppet Show; their sisterhood was sealed in the Haunted Mansion with a pair of rusted scissors and bound index fingers. The trio caught the Green Tortoise in the parking lot and headed to Manhattan, where they have been turning it out ever since.

"We just want to party," Ms. Matronic says. "Our music and shows are as much for hormonal teenagers and housewives with a dancing bug as it is for the downtown party scene."
