Hi all,
We've been chasing these guys from A Touch Of Class for a while now. They run the label of the same name, and also produce a remix a bunch of stuff that seems to have a staggeringly high hit/shit ratio. Domie "LeTouch" Clausen and Oliver "T. Class" Stumm founded ATOC in 1999 and since then have remixed people like A.R.E. Weapons, Scissor Sisters and The Ones, and released smashing singles by Waldorf, Pop Deluxe, and Secret Weapons. Below is a transcript of my email correspondence I had with the gents of classy touch.

hi domie,
thanks for the swift response. whenever you get a chance to answer some
of these would be cool. i've spat out a few questions, so just pick whatever
ones you'd like to answer, no need to answer them all. thank you so much,
i'll
let you know when it goes up. what's your postal address, i'll throw some of
our shitty records in the mail.
glen.

where are you going to play records? what's the occasion?

We play records in illegal 'smoke easys" in New York City every now and
then. We'll do a small tour end of May, beginning of June starting at the
primavera festival in Barcelona then heading over to Portugal by way of
Madrid (nasti club) before we head north/east to Berlin and Eastern Europe.

why did you and oliver get together to form ATOC?

Because we just broke up with our girlfriends and thought it would be a
great way to upgrade.

you've done some pretty different parties (bordello series, sprinroll,
karaoke), would you mind if we modularpeople ripped off your ideas and ran similar things here in sydney?

Only if we're invited to the Bordello series.

who is responsible for your website and all the cool interactive stuff? if
the man at work here knew how much time i'd wasted on them i might be out of a job.

eh that would be Domie

is there a common thread to the kind of acts you like to put out/remix on
your label? your quality control seems exceptional.

it has to in one way or another be retarded, that's our rule, and then we
make it sound really good in our studio. That's our concept: retarded music
that sounds like the best!

when are you gonna record an album? how would that sound?

We are starting to record our material soon. It will be mostly stuff that
was too retarded for the other acts.

have you any plans to license/distribute your records in australia?
or even come down here and spin shitty records?

we'd love to!!! Give everybody our number and have em call us, oh and 2
surfboards are already on our "rider".

what has been your favourite remix you've done?

A.R.E. Weapons "Streetgang", because it's perfect!

you guys must be pretty busy doing everything associated with the label, are you actually robots? what do you do in your time off?

We don't have much time off. But on our time off we would love to be beach
bums.

how do you feel about all the NYC rock around at the moment?

too much indie rock by characterless softies with vintage t-shirts and
girlie haircuts supported rich parents, it's all fabricated.

top 5 tips to for a person wanting to exude an air of class about them:
top 5 tips for creating an unhinged dancefloor romper, by ATOC:

always wear red underwear.
always do the opposite from what everybody expects.
let them come to you never go to them.
rip ideas off blatantly and laugh in their faces, never use the word
"inspiration".
always use an element that doesn't fit, like let's say a flute in a punk
song...
if it sounds retarded your on the right path
if the distributor says he can't sell it then it's a hit!

top 5 people you would like to remix:

The Strokes, because they sound aaawwwwwful and need some help
Yeah Yeah Yeahs because they got class
!!! because they got potential
Vive la fete because they got the looooks!
boney M because they got the mystique?

thanks again guys. much love.

to those with the class touch,
i'm the web coordinator type for modularpeople, home of modular
recordings and artists like the avalanches, yeah yeah yeahs, cut copy
and the bumblebeez. i'm repsonsible for putting together content for
our site, which we kinda run like a magazine, with bi-monthly major
updates. so anyway, we're real fans of A Touch Of Class as a record
label, and also think your site is v cool. we'd like to run a little
piece on you guys with our next issue, going up around march. if mr
clausen and mr stumm would be at all interested in answering a couple
of my shitty questions, please let me know cause we'd really like to
get a bit of an insight into your label. to get an idea of what we do,
check out www.modularpeople.com
thanx,
glen.
